Mixing

What Is Mixing?

Audio mixing is the process by which multiple sounds are combined into one or more channels. Audio mixing is practiced for music, film, television and live sound. The process is generally carried out by a mixing engineer operating a mixing console or digital audio workstation.

Why Is Mixing Important?

Over the course of your career, I’m sure you’ve wondered; why is mixing important or what separates my record from my favorite artist record, or why does their beat hit harder than mine; or why does my song sound different on these speakers. These answers can all be answered by mixing and why having your song, or project mixed is important. Imagine driving a car without any paint and your just driving a metal frame with windows on it; it looks dull and isn’t appealing or eye-catching. Now imagine that same car with a nice fresh coat of paint, the car has a brand new meaning, you feel empowered, you feel excited, you feel happy, you feel like a brand new person. Now take that same concept and apply that towards your music or audio project. When you hear your song or project properly mixed, it gives you a sense of power, it gives you a sense of affirmation knowing that your dreams and ideas are now a reality and that those sounds and concepts you were hearing in your head aren’t far fetched. Mixing is that coat of paint on your song or audio project. Along with cleaning up various clicks, pops, and other audio nuances; mixing can give your song new meaning and life and also sometimes be the defining moment in getting you that record deal, or that placement with that artist you have been wanting to work with. Mixing is the glue that brings all the important parts of your song or audio project into perspective.
